My Big Day Marketing and Events is celebrating their 15th Anniversary! Over the years MBD has had a number of interns... 15 in fact! Many stayed on and learned from and worked with My Big Day. Our past interns have grown and blossomed, and many still work in the event field. So where are they now and how are they doing? Tiffany Rose is still working for MBD Events and Marketing as Manager, Magic Maker. She works as many events as she can and helps out with marketing while enjoying every moment! She is back in school for her Master’s Certificate in Marketing and hopes to stick with MBD forever! She is also busy planning her own wedding coming up in August of this year! Katie Patterson is still with MBD Marketing and Events as Director, Community Wizard. She works events that are near her new home in Denver, travels to the mountains with us, and helps to manage as an event lead. Katie also works on marketing for some of our partners! She has her Masters in Communication Studies and is interested in community work focused in organizational outreach. Lynzee Laney still works with MBD Marketing and Events as Coordinator, Sunshine Maker. She is also the Catering Manager at Nordy’s BBQ and Grill. She is a mother of two little ones and somehow is able to always have a smile on her face! Sarah Biekert who is My Big Day’s Coordinator, Punctuation Prodigy says, “I met Lynzee for the first time at Blue Federal Credit Union's Discovery Day in 2018, one month after I joined My Big Day. She was expecting her first child shortly at the time, and I remember being impressed by her energy and work ethic. She was one of the first friendly faces of My Big Day that I met, and I left that event feeling so excited to work for this company – fast forward three years later, and I still am!” We caught up with the much-loved Brielle Welch to see how she is doing and she stated, “After MBD, I was an environmental educator and camp director at multiple kids camps and programs around Colorado. After that, I was the banquet manager for the Plaza Convention Center in Longmont. Next, I was a wedding coordinator at Lionsgate event center in Lafayette. Covid was hard, and I had to end my time there, but I think I was ready to leave and slow things down a bit. I am now a personal vacation advisor at Inspirato helping members book and plan their luxury vacations. I recently got engaged, and I will be married next year!” Makenzie studied at University of Northern Colorado and interned with My Big Day a couple years ago. At the completion of her internship, she got offered a dream job in Florida, and now lives in Tampa with her fiancé! Kasey graduated from CSU and interned with My Big Day post graduation. She is still living in Fort Collins, Colorado. She started a rope leash company with her friend in early 2018. We love your entrepreneurial spirit, Kasey! When we asked Sarah what she is up to she responded happily saying, “An update since working with MBD, I got married in 2017 and my husband and I moved to Florida right after our wedding. We lived there for about a year, then moved to Maryland where we spent about a year and a half and then moved to Washington state and have been here for about a year and a half now. We had a little girl 1 year ago as of last week and we have been living life loving on her! I currently work as an office manager and spend our days hiking and chasing our daughter around.” Victoria graduated with a marketing degree from University of Wyoming in 2015 and interned with MBD a couple years following. She is now living in Seattle Washington working as a marketing research assistant at Executive Insight Properties. Yvette is one of our most recent interns, graduating from CSU in spring 2020. Yvette interned with us and one of our clients on a political campaign.She is still living in Colorado and works at A Precious Child, who MBD just happens to be planning a fundraiser for this Fall! Our entire team is sending all of our former interns hugs and well wishes! We love watching your grow in your careers and witnessing your very full lives!
If you’ve been bingeing on wedding movies in preparation for your big day, titles like “The Wedding Planner,” “Bridesmaids,” and “Bride Wars” probably come to mind. We’ll admit, some of us enjoy a girls’ night in with these guilty pleasure films – but they’re not totally accurate in depicting the event planning world. Here are a few things the movies get wrong about what event planning REALLY looks like: The over-the-top weddings Movie weddings tend to be extravagant and exaggerated, which can set unrealistic expectations for brides-to-be. Many of the weddings shown in these rom-coms would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to recreate – some over a million dollars. Since the average amount couples budget for a wedding in the United States is $33,900, these weddings aren’t feasible for most couples to recreate. The good news is that we can help you create a magazine-worthy wedding even if your budget is less than a sixth of that national average. The drama Sure, we’ve seen some drama, but not every bride is a Bridezilla, not every mother-of-the-bride has a vendetta against the couple, and not every corporate client is difficult to work with. In fact, we love our clients, past and present. Events are often stressful for clients. After all, it’s your big day, and there’s a lot at stake. But that’s why you hired us! Our job is to relieve that stress and keep the drama to a minimum so you can soak up every memorable moment. Still - sometimes real life is even MORE unbelievable What if the picturesque trolley you hired to shuttle guests to their hotels after your scenic mountain wedding can’t make it out of the icy parking lot? Or, what if a water pipe bursts in the wall just before your ceremony on a -20 degree day? Yes, we have seen those things happen. Event planning requires equal parts perfectionism and flexibility. You don’t want your event planner to be a deer in headlights when something doesn’t go according to plan. That’s why you hire us! We don’t get involved in clients’ personal lives As tempted as we may be if our client were Matthew McConaughey, you won’t catch us out drinking and dancing with a groom-to-be. We help our clients navigate personal circumstances from a logistical perspective, but we won’t be hanging around outside of meetings or gossiping with family members. We work as a team Certainly, there are solo event planners out there who make it work. But we find that event planning works best as a team. Remember that burst water pipe we mentioned? While some of our team was collecting gushing water in trash cans and throwing it outside, the rest of us were seamlessly conducting a wedding ceremony in the next room – on time, we might add. Meet our team of talented women here. We don’t use code words Okay, we could do this if we really wanted to, but we find it works just as well to communicate discreetly about what’s really going on. We always strive for transparency when it’s appropriate. And when we’re trying to mitigate your stress on the day of your big event, we’ll handle it as a team behind the scenes. The perfect vision takes planning – and lots of logistics If events magically fell into place, we’d be out of a job. Having a vision is great, but what happens when your dream venue doesn’t allow you to work with the outside caterer you had your heart set on? Weddings and all other events require juggling lots of moving parts. If you have an event planner from the start, you won’t run into these issues. But even if you come to us further along in the process, don’t worry – we are great problem-solvers. We don’t trash talk past clients with our current clients (and we certainly don’t take bets on how long marriages will last) These things are unprofessional – not to mention just in bad taste. We wish all of our clients – couples, families, small businesses, and large corporations – the best, and we strive to give you the best. 3. Order delivery or grab some takeout for a date night in Bring the restaurant date night to you. Order in delivery or takeout from your favorite romantic restaurant - even fancy steakhouses and seafood restaurants are offering takeout during the pandemic. If you want to go all out, recreate the restaurant atmosphere at home with tablecloths, your best plates and glassware, and some candles and flowers to set the mood. If you don’t live with your partner, you can still enjoy the meal together via video chat. You can even surprise your S.O. (significant other) with the romantic meal by ordering the food ahead of time to be delivered to them. Most restaurants with their own delivery system will offer this, as do Uber Eats’ share system and Grubhub. 4. Shop local gifts Show your partner and struggling local businesses some love this year by choosing unique gifts from a small shop in your area. If you’re worried about going inside, many small businesses are offering curbside pickup, and some have even set up online ordering with shipping. Stream a virtual concert Virtual concerts are still happening - more than ever. If concerts are a favorite date night pastime for you, now you can recreate the music fan experience at home. You can now easily search Google for a list of upcoming virtual concerts. Clear the living room for slow dancing (or a mosh pit, if that’s more your vibe), have an in-home concert “tailgate,” and have your favorite concert drinks on hand. 6. Make chocolate fondue Chocolate and romance go hand-in-hand, and nothing is more romantic than melted chocolate with fruit or sweets. You may not feel comfortable going to your favorite fondue restaurant this year, but you can bring the fondue experience home. You can buy a fondue pot online for as little as $15 these days, grab a box of strawberries, melt a bag of chocolate chips, and voilà.
8. Send Valentines through snail mail Maybe you’re in a long distance relationship, or maybe you just want to surprise your partner with a note or two left around the house. Either way, handwritten notes are a romantic tradition that go a long way in today’s world of text messages and Snapchats. Take your time writing (practice that cursive?) and, if you’re mailing your Valentine, use your nicest stationery or take some time to personalize what you have. Doodles or notes in the margins will make these keepsakes even more memorable, and you’ll love looking back on them together down the road. 9. Serve your loved one breakfast in bed Surprise breakfast in bed is basically never a bad idea, if you ask us. Sneak out of bed early to prepare your loved one’s favorite meal (pizza is fine for breakfast, by the way) and surprise them with it. Alternatively, cook breakfast together, then head back to bed to enjoy your culinary creations and spend the day being couch bed potatoes. 10. Connect virtually If you can’t be together this Valentine’s Day, carve out some time to connect virtually. Phone calls, video calls, and virtual activities like an online class or Netflix movie party are an easy way to show someone you’re thinking of them. Other ideas include eating a meal or sharing a glass of wine “together,” live streaming the same concert, or solving a virtual escape room. 11. Get outdoors together Coloradoans are known for our love of the outdoors, so take to one of your local trails or head up to the mountains with your partner for a romantic outing in nature. My Big Day has a helpful list for you! Keep it small - The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is with just your immediate family. Traveling is still considered risky - hotels, airports, planes, and gas stations are more crowded during the holidays. Hold your immediate loved ones close and sit down for an intimate dinner featuring everyone’s favorites. Swap recipes - Try something new and feel closer to your family at the same time by swapping recipes with grandma via email or text. The 2020 holiday season may leave your relatives – particularly the older and more vulnerable – feeling lonely. Involve them by reaching out for recipes or decorating tips and spending time on a phone or video call while you’re cooking. Go virtual - In addition to individual video and phone calls, many creative planners are already gearing up to host Thanksgiving dinner virtually on a simultaneous video call. Invite friends and family (you can even send a paper invitation, if you want to be fancy) to gather around the (virtual) table and eat together. After all, what would Thanksgiving be without Aunt Judy’s unsolicited advice and Grandma’s etiquette corrections? Enjoy already-COVID-friendly traditions - There are plenty of Thanksgiving activities that are already COVID-friendly: watching parades and sports on TV, playing family board games, and going for a walk or run post-turkey. Others can be modified, i.e. moving your Black Friday shopping online this year. Give thanks - There are countless activities to be found online (check out My Big Day’s “Saying Thank You” Pinterest board [https://www.pinterest.com/MyBigDayEvents/saying-thank-you/] for some of our favorite ways to say thanks) to encourage kids and adults alike to express what they are grateful for. It is especially important this year to remember what we do have, when so much seems missing or different. You may surprise yourself and find that you appreciate Thanksgiving this year all the more for its simplicity and quality time at home. Finally, if you must invite someone from outside your household: Host outdoors - Try moving your festivities outdoors (weather permitting). Not only is it a fun change of pace to spend the day outdoors in the fresh air, it reduces the risk of COVID spreading among your party. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a barbecue-style Thanksgiving dinner. Clean before and after - This is another one that’s important if you’re hosting a guest from outside your home. You’ll want to be extra-diligent this year about cleaning your home and, especially, dinner table before and after your guest arrives. Make sure you take the same approach to bathrooms and doorknobs, known as high-touch areas. Ask guests to wash their hands before they come to your house, and use hand sanitizer when they arrive and periodically throughout the day. Consider a buffet - By far the safest way to host a meal this season is to have each guest serve themselves. Have clean utensils and a plate already set out for each guest, so they can bring them to the buffet rather than reaching into a shared utensil cup or stack of dishes. Consider using disposable utensils, plates, and napkins, or for an eco-friendly approach, ask guests to bring their own place setting from home that they’ll take with them when they leave. Also encourage guests to clean up after themselves by having a foot-touch or already open trash can ready for any unfinished tidbits of food. Mask up - It may feel extreme, but you can reduce the risk of COVID spreading to your family and friends by having everyone wear a mask except when eating or drinking. Remember, the more alcohol people consume, the less likely they are to wear a mask or to wear one properly. If you don’t want to spend the day dishing out reminders, it may be best to limit the alcohol this year. Get tested and stay home if you have symptoms - Guests who are traveling should get tested before hopping on an airplane and travel only if they have a negative test and no symptoms, to minimize risk to others. The same goes for hosts: Even if dinner is an hour away and the turkey is in the oven, the safest option for everyone is to cancel. Here is a list of symptoms to watch out for:

Company values are often integrated into a company’s mission statement, a formal summary of the aims and values of a company or organization. Visible mission statements benefit a business in multiple ways: They give companies a solid foundation that guides future business activities, and they resonate with customers who share the company’s values. My Big Day has always valued community, creativity, and making memories for our clients. In recent years, My Big Day has expanded our services to include full-service marketing options and year-long event management contracts for other companies and nonprofits. Our company is now in the process of expanding and refining our mission statement with input from all members of our team. We’d like to share with our readers the process of creating a mission statement and the importance of values, as well as some specifics from our journey through this process. Defining your company’s core values is one of the most effective first steps in developing a mission statement. As an employer, you can ask yourself why your business exists and what you believe it provides to others. It’s important to also reach out to employees for input. Ask employees what they like about working for your company, what they think is most important about the company, and what difference it makes in your community. Some examples of the statements our company received from employees are: “My Big Day is contributing to the positive environment we have created for ourselves as employees, and in turn for all of our clients,” and, “I think there is a mentality [in the company] that melds professionalism with play in a unique way that allows all of the work we do for fun.”
For a company with high employee engagement and morale, values should line up naturally. My Big Day collected keywords and employee statements with a series of emailed questions from our company coach, Katie Beaubian, who sums up the importance of company values: “Core values of a business are the values that are incorporated into everything we do – from how we show up to events, to what clients we work with to how we interact with each other as a team.” My Big Day is proud of our company values and the way they translate into not just the professional execution of our work, but into community outreach and employee and client satisfaction.
